Frame to Shadow Box

My friend introduced me to these frames and I instantly wanted to make a shadow box for my daughter’s room. So here is how I did it.

First, I ordered a 20″x30″ frame from here.

Then I removed the back, measured the open area and how tall and wide my box should be. I went to Home Depot and had them cut 4″x1″ boards the lengths that I needed them. I made sure to measure the the top boards so they would create a nice corner with the side boards – they actually extended 2″ longer than the opening (1 inch on each side).

I also had them cut a smooth, thin, sheet to fit the back of the frame. (Double check your measurements).

Next I used wood glue and brackets to secure the corners of the boards together. I also used wood glue and screws the fasten the back to the box.
After I finished the box. I painted the entire box white. I also painted the frame blue before fastening them together.
Once painted, I used Elmer’s Wood Glue, and nothing else and secured the box to the frame. I put weights on the box and left it for 24 hours to ensure the glue dried. Afterwards, it turned out great. I also made a mini-garland to hang on the inside. It isn’t too heavy and I have a nice little shelf to put things on in her room. Love it! 🙂
